A comprehensive introduction of normal sleep architecture will be followed by a presentation of the characteristics of the various sleep stages. You will learn how brain (EEG), eye movement (EOG), and mental / submental muscle (EMG) signals are used to define Non-REM Stages Wake, 1, 2, 3 & 4, and Stage REM sleep. Individual epoch examples will illustrate how these variables, viewed collectively, provide diagnostic information regarding normal and / or abnormal sleep. The new AASM scoring guidelines are covered in depth.
EEG Arousals will be defined and illustrated helping you understand how to identify these disturbances of sleep.
You will learn how to identify and score obstructive, central, and mixed apneas and hypopneas as well as periodic limb movements.
You will learn how the MSLT is performed and scored.
PRACTICUMS
Each course participant will have ample opportunity to independently practice staging sleep scoring numerous epochs. You will also learn to tabulate and interpret the data.
You will practice scoring, tabulating and interpreting the data.
Each participant will independently score apneas and hypopneas and PLMs. You will hand score and calculate the various respiratory indexes.
You will combine all you have learned to score about sleep staging, EEG arousals, apneas and hypopneas and periodic limb movements to practice scoring the entire Polysomnogram.
Course participants will score and tabulate MSLT data.
ADDITIONAL PRESENTATIONS
You will learn how to recognize various artifacts encountered on the polysomnogram. Examples will be presented familiarizing you with the specific characteristics of each type.
The course concludes with a general review and answering final questions. A self assessment examination will be administered and after everyone has completed the test we will review each question and provide the correct answer.
